We received a plea from the Special Care Baby Unit at North Hampshire Hospital – they wanted little quilts for premature babies….. lots of them! On average they care for 360 premature babies each and every year. Some need just a few hours of care, some stay a lot longer. All need specialist care and, of course, love.

But why quilts? The quilts are not for the baby to sleep under. During baby’s stay their quilt sits on the top of their incubator and adds a little colour and softness to the super clinical environment. Come what may, the parents keep the quilt as a personal reminder of the loving care their baby received from the nursing staff.

360 quilts a year is a tall order! We have made a great start and have already delivered our first 30 quilts. A further 50 are ready and waiting, but this is an exceptional challenge and we need your help. The baby quilts are only 16” by 20” and don’t take much time or fabric to make. They are also an ideal size to try out new piecing or quilting techniques and we have found that simple ideas often work really well.

If you would like to help by making a little quilt we would really love to hear from you.
